First of all...no offense to any of you beauty pageant people but i have a strong hate for beauty pageants. I think they are unneccesary rubbish to waste your precious time over. your oppinion is quite important but your looks....not...Gay marriges are something that I think we should not be talking of or considering in piano street. It is against the law now....So I think that is over and done with...We should talk of more important things...like abuse for children and animals...MOst of you will say thats probably not important. But i think it is important. I think strongly that it is important.

I wonder where musicians fit in here?

Xenakis, Carter etc... would allow the musician to say "mathematics is just applied to music"

Perhaps you meant "mathematics is just applied music"?
In either case, the musical languages of Xenakis and Carter are rather vastly different, even though both are complex. Carter never wrote music that was "merely" musically notated mathematical formulae, or pieces that consist wholly of bits of other pieces.
In the long run, any words about music are less important than the music. Anyone who thinks otherwise is not worth talking to (Shostakovich)

Nor will he in the future, I imagine; let's not forget that, unlike Xenakis, he is still very much alive and still composing!..

Thanks, DB and Thal :).

I just don't understand things sometimes and sometimes I don't even know how to take things one day at a time  :P.  I will probably feel *slightly* differently after today is done and after a couple of weeks have passed.  I hope anyway.  There is just something inside of me that needs to come out, and sometimes I really don't know how to handle it.  I probably feel this way in part because lately I have not had the kind of time I want/need for practicing piano, actually.  That seems to create some kind of dire emergency in me  :P.  So, I am going to try to just chill out  :P.

It's   understandable  about feelings of not having the time to practice....I have four instruments to practice in which I cannot devote much of my time with....and it's hard to chose which one I need to work on with each passing day.  I got frustrated in my post about my woes as a piano teacher in the other thread here.....so it's good to vent and then afterwards, it feels good to know that others do empathize too.

best wishes,

I feel like I understand you wanting to be in the zone again. It feels so good to have something going on and feel the momentum, but it never lasts... It feels so perfect at one time, but nothing is ever perfect, and there's always something missing, something that needs work.

I don't know if it is any consolation, but I envy your relationship with piano and music very much. If the piano were human, then I would be the desperate housewife with at least one affair going on... I wonder what it would be like to play with someone like you. Would I be able to catch the fire? And if I did, could I take the heat?

I guess what I don't really understand is something that is actually very deeply-rooted, it seems.  I don't understand how, if I am actually "created" in such a way that in order to fulfill my life's purpose I should be doing more singing and playing, how is it intelligent design if that is true but there are not enough time and resources to support it with ?  In a very practical example, I don't even live near my teachers, or rather where I live no longer has teachers that I need.  I have found somebody for piano whom is wonderful and to whom I travel about once a month, and there is a voice teacher I can work with once in a while (she lives clear across the country), but I can't travel to both consistently simply because we don't have the resources ... I have to work to support my travels, yet work gets in the way of my practice and not practicing defeats the purpose of traveling anywhere.  You see ?  It's just so frustrating.  Even if I lived in one teacher's town, I would probably still have to travel for the other.  If I were going to really serve both my instruments right, truly right, true to what is inside of me, then that would be what my "work-day" is 'about' and that would be my main responsibility in life.  Yes, that's a dream of some sort ... I started a thread awhile back, wondering how many people in history ever had that kind of life ... one in which they could seriously develop themselves in a way that truly serves the need for development ... but, it's so burning in me that it's very difficult to live with sometimes.  I know, that sounds stupid.

Anyway, I have an audition in less than 4 hours, and that is a big part of what is spurring on this whole thing ... though it's certainly not the reason.  This is something I have been ... wrestling with in one way or another for years.  At the same time, I realize I have a lot to be grateful for and I should probably not neglect to actually be grateful !

Karli, I don't think there is something written up there that we are "created" to fulfill something. But if you feel this is your life's purpose, then go for it!! Or whatever that means... Hmmm. I think everyone is frustrated, or at least most people are going through challenges. Even (gasp!) you. No it doesn't sound stupid, a lot of people go through that and you actually handle it quite well. If it's any help to rant here, we're all ears. You have a great attitude, and it's enviable that you have this type of problem. Most people never get to be more than beginners at music, or meet great teachers of any pursuit.

I wish you the best of luck in your audition and most importantly, the pursuit of your dreams. If you can't do it, I'm sure I and a lot of others can't...

No.  All I ever do is make believe that I am singing, I never actually do it !   :o:P :-*.  Okay, but really, of COURSE I have been "looking into" what there is for me to sing ... not exhaustively, of course.  I would never wish to actually exhaust myself over singing ... hee hee ... that's a joke !  I just nearly exhausted myself in my very audition !  I got the "great dress" comments at the end ... and let's admit here and now, it is a pretty darn spectacular dress !!!  There is no way around that one !  And, do you know part of what makes it spectacular ?  I have very good taste !  :D ;D  ... ha ha ... well, that's actually true  ;D, but my REAL point is that it actually looks as though it were *made* for *me*  ;D.  I am not sure what to make of comments on clothing though at the end of an audition ... it certainly wasn't the best sing of my life ... but there were good things.  However, comments on a dress could be taken two ways :

1.  We really like you and feel we cannot actually tell you that we want you to sing in our Opera, therefore we are letting you know we like you by commenting on your dress ...

OR

2.  Yeah, not a great audition from you, girl, but you are a nice person and we are also nice people, so even though we won't call you back this afternoon, we want to be cordial and nice and we are going to comment on something that IS actually good about you showing up today ... ha ha !

Now, back to the repertoire ... see, the thingio is that much of what I *have* checked out uses parts of my voice well ... I happen to be a somewhat complex character, and I think there are things about that which are reflected in my voice.  I don't know that I have ever met a piece that just feels and seems like it was made for me to wear in my voice, you know ?  :) 8)

Now, now, you would definitely find a piece that fits you as spectacularly as the dress... Otherwise, you should consider being a model or a pop star instead. American Idol perhaps?

She doesn't need to make an effort to look nice, I'm sure she is gorgeous, dress or no dress.

Which presumably is somewhere between these shores in which the OED holds sway as one of the standard works of its kind by which our population (which, I hear, still includes a few British people [not that I'm one of them, as you know]) and those beyond which "go" is domiciled. No criticism is or was intended here, incidentally - merely an observation about a word which, in UK, might be thought to have rather more to do with horses...

It's no wonder that you graduated from that charm school summa cum laude...

After having graduated this month with my master's, I'm trying to figure out how to make a living.

Teach someone else how to pass a master's exam and charge them a lot of money for it.

I want to see Karli's dress and hear her sing or play piano. See if I can catch the fire.

She is using the NAWD and you the OED.

Now a word from the TED (Thals English Dictionary)

BOG OFF
That looks very much like two words to me , both of which, incidentally, almost certainly appear in both Webster and OED; quite why you adopt the pianistimo-like CAPITALS is less clear, however...

Well, at least that one is just one word and it does not appear in that form either in Webster or OED...

By the way, *behoves*, as you spell it, isn't in my New American Webster Dictionary.
 I KNOW , it is  *behooves.*       ;)

best wishes,

Behoove, now wouldn't that mean something like "putting hooves on"? As in “behold”, i.e. “putting a hold on”.

Now even I know it’s behove, rather than behoove, and I even aint no English dude ye know mate!?

Hey, where did you get that from?   *behoove*  (with expletive it) be fitting or necessary.  This word *behoove* does not have anything to do with putting hooves on a horse.    ::)

As Thal implied, it's probably no more than a difference of use between American and British English as represented respectively in Webster and OED; in British english, the word (as "gep" indicates he knows even though he is not British and English is not, as he admits, his first language) would indeed be suggestive of the act of putting of hooves on a horse - at least in theory, although it would be hard to imagine how it would be done in practice, since horses already have hooves, whereas the meaning of "behoves" appears to accords to your intended use of "behooves".

Anyway, it's not that important! And, for what it's worth, at least Webster is not a term to describe someone who makes frequent use of the internet, either on my side of the pond or on yours!
