Definition of English:

A citizen who was born or who has become a permanent resident in the country of England.

Definition of Welsh:

A citizen who was born or who has become a permanent resident in the country of Wales.

Same island.  And they all look the same to me, anyway.  Scottish, Welsh, English, whatever.

Barbaric language, English is.  Full of deliberate mispronunciations of foreign tongues and terms.  The Welsh and the Scots get points for their indigenous tongues, which may be able to survive somewhat into the future.

Its my belief that Cornish separatism has not drawn first blood, but they should.

I'd have some sort of clever comeback, but I was awoken this morning at 4:10am by an heroin junkie armed with a baseball bat and a large kitchen knife, named Derek who had seemingly gotten stuck on my roof and was unable to get down without police assistance.

So to J_Tour... (insert witty statement here)

Watch that space... I'll have something clever when I've had more sleep.

I don't think heroin users care that much about football...

They probably care more about... you know... heroin.

Anyway, I'm tired - off to bed for me. Hopefully no more arseholes clomping on my roof tonight.

Are you kidding me?  Some of the Haydn keyboard sonatas are some of the most fun things to play that exist.

I don't really listen to much music, but in terms of sight-reading and playing Haydn at the keyboard, there's no question it's a lot of fun, with a lot of expressive openings available to the performer.

Run.

Do it.

Get to the chopper!

/*I don't mean I don't *ever* listen to music....if I'm trying to decide how to play something, of course I'll listen to András Schiff or Angela Hewitt or somebody and see how they do it, even if just to get a general idea of the tempo, say, in some Bach dance movement....but I don't listen to music generally for fun.*/

I can also add my support for playing Haydn keyboard Sonata's. They're full of whimsy and they're tasteful in any situation.

I do however also love listening to music. They're something glorious about listening to 'O Fortuna' at maximum volume when driving down the freeway.

Well, while driving is different.

I have very few rules for passengers in my car, but one of the standard things I say is "The music stays on, and don't talk to me."

I did just yesterday set up a new turntable....old Pioneer from the 1970s, the motor died, so I gave it to charity, as I found a new cheap model with an OK cartridge pre-installed from some Canadian company.  It's a fine deck, and will serve my modest collection of recordings well.

Listened to about a minute or so of a recording on it to test if the preamp connections were OK.  I'd have to be pretty drunk to listen to music, though, normally.

Or play it, for that matter, on whatever instrument.

Yes, I find the sounds of terrified, screeching passengers to be very good indeed.

Only Yoko Ono has managed to transcribe those emissions accurately.

Haydn on the front, put them on the Bach.

Well, it depends.

Does one prefer the first or the last colonoscopy?

I like the later ones, because I can procrastinate, since I'm still a young boy of ....ahem....something years old.

Serious question....which of the print editions does one prefer for the last handful of Haydn sonate?  I've been using for years just printed out scores from IMSLP, but I decided I should have a proper volume....kind of similar to some of the Mozart sonate or keyboard concerti....played them but didn't really need or want an archival volume to weigh down my bookshelves.

Meh, I guess the Henle Vol. 3 is good, I just didn't want to plunk down fifty bucks USD sight unseen.....although that can get to be a habit....

a) No one likes their first colonoscopy... NO ONE. There isn't a person alive who thought it was a wonderful experience.

b) I never pay money for music I can't physically see in person. If you're buying online, then you're a sucker.

That's just silly.  Everyone knows the engraving style of the Henle editions, to name one publisher among many, and it's clearly stated if a particular edition has fingering suggestions or not, and who the editor(s) are.

Not to mention it's possible to see example pages of what a specific text looks like on, albeit on a mere computer screen.

I know I don't care for the Alfred editions for this kind of thing (although fine for other pieces of music):  just like in their Scarlatti books, they assemble a hodge-podge of different selections, without much pretense of preserving order (although I'm sure it's coherent in the judgment of the editor).

Sorry, I meant to clarify - you shouldn't be buying online because there are people out there who do try and sell 'brand new' books that aren't properly 'brand new'.

I like to hold the thing in my hands that I'm about to buy. I don't trust that they thing on the monitor is what I'm going to get.

Have you seen how many people have offered products on Amazon, and they're not quite in the condition that is represented on the screen?

That's a fair point.  I generally avoid buying from third party sellers on the larger of the online sellers, unless it is a book I expressly want a cheap used copy of, or some obscure out-of-print text or recording.

Generally not worth the effort to return defective merchandise to these individual micro-merchants.

I suspected as much from a pianist.

Don't worry, I'll be doing the same at my mighty organ.  However my feet are too big to adequately work the pedals, and with my large hands it can be difficult to doing anything beyond crude at the manual.

I'm assuming that's because of your raging alcoholism and not particularly due to the event itself.

Anyway, it is a Feast Day in the Church, so it is encouraged....as it is every other day among we who are fully initiated Catholics of the Roman Rite.

Didn't slow down notables such as Graham Greene or Evelyn Waugh, to name but two extremely influential English Catholics.

A bit late for the upside-down and across people, but nonetheless:

First of all - I said that, because Australians and the Japanese, New Zealand people are one of the first few to experience Christmas before the other countries do, so I was merely using the opportunity to say it to as many people as possible.

And to be honest - most of the Feast Days in the Church are completely forgotten. No one really cares about the feast day of the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. Do you know when it is (without googling it)??? I sure as heck don't.

What about the feast day of St Andrew Kim Taegon?
What about the feast day of St Basil the Great and St Gregory Nazianzen???

Lee was a great pianist as well.

Liberace, best known as.  But we who knew him well called him 'Lee,' as an adoration.

Did the same, we did, for Ernest Borgnine and Lee Marvin.  Oh, they'd stamp their feet and raise hell, but we did it out of love.

What?  Go have some more eggnog or watch the telly and see a right game of footie.

What about the feast day of St Andrew Kim Taegon? What about the feast day of St Basil the Great and St Gregory Nazianzen???

What about them?  There are twenty-three (23) rites in communion with Rome, and I suppose the Latin/Roman Rite is what most people think of as the Church.  And there are the separated brethren.  And the schism, and all those people.  Plus the countless Protestant sects, including the Anglicans.

What is this, a theology classroom?  I don't give a damned.  Being an atheist Catholic, as were my betters Graham Greene and Evelyn Waugh, among others.  I never receive the Eucharist, although I do enough to exchange the secret handshake.

And I can (and do) say the mass in Latin (the parts that are required from the laity)...it's actually more difficult for me to translate from Latin to the official English text.  Yet another reason I'm boning up on my Spanish....better language than English, arguably.

How many child prodigies though get shoved into the world of pianism by their parents and realise they want to do something else in life?

Why would anyone wish a child, still more his or her own, to become a professional musician?

It's not a good life, and one still has to deal with the corporation pulling the strings.

Except one is still just the hired help.

Being a scullery maid is probably better, in terms of respect.  A cop or something.  Whatever.  A bartender.  There exist truly terrible people in this world, I've learned.

Play stupid games and win stupid prizes.

Every once in a while they'll trot out Ebenezer Kung who strangled himself in compound meter with perfect intonation at the age of three, pour encourager les autres, and is still at it at ninety-seven years young.  And with the forearms of a right sailor as well, and memory most adept.

Maybe it's possible as a composer to secure still a funded chair in a department of music, but I don't think a mere performer has any chance of a similar position.  Not unless the performer has a significant CV as a researcher or can find an honorarium for a temporary chair among the faculty.  Still be an itinerant adjunct, just the same as a regular teacher working for wages.

Hell, I'd rather sell tomatoes or whatever, myself.  But my good looks and rave reviews keep me on the front pages of most publications since the age of sixteen or so.  Just luck, really.

I have 3 types of whiskey, so I'm looking forward to it.

These fiends who bought the liquor store across the street from me.....they pulled a devious prank, really.

Normally,* I head straight to the Irish section and have a modest conversation in my head about what I feel like drinking.

Now, those fiends have put the Scotch whiskies right next to the cash register.

And this is a small store, you know.  Anything truly rare or pricey is under lock and key.

But it is tempting.  Even the Glenmos and such Glenlivets....they are the devil, these operators of this shop!

The Scottish do generally put on a better show of their wares, when it comes to their liquors.  Muted but assertive boxes....the Irishes are not really much to show, when it comes to that.

Those bastards.  I was almost ready to exchange my humble bottle of Teeling single for a Glenmo with the clever label.

I modestly propose that liquor store robberies should not be a thing of the past any longer.  Liberación!

/* * No, normally I go to a better shop with a nice plump gal who is friendly to me on my way into and out of town, but, when one requires fluids, one adapts. */

You will be surprised how many parents out there push their kids to do something completely against their will because it makes mommy and daddy look awesome.

Have you SEEN what YouTube is like right now and how many parents exploit their children for their videos???

It's getting insane. I mean that in the genuine psychological use of the term. There are people out there who should NOT have kids.

even if it means watching bat-sh*t Americans do more and more stupid things for attention; even if it means filming their crimes.

Trust me, I'm very much aware of the depraved trash infesting the halls, towns, highways, and byways across this nation.

And I don't need to see it emerge from the tape-delayed piehole of some tarted up puppet of commercial lard sellers, either.

And I carry a pistol with me wherever I go.  And a knife.  And a helmet.  And sturdy shoes.  And an umbrella.  And sunglasses.  And a jock protector.  And spray deodorant.  And a source of fire.  And a shotgun microphone attached to a field recorder.

Dammit.

Do an XOR code.

That code doesn't work unless it's in real time.  There's no skill involved in looking up the tokens.

I just had a "debate" with a guy who believed that Mozart was a garbage composer and didn't understand why anyone, even remotely, considered him a music composer. I am proud to announce that I have discovered that people far more asinine than I am actually exist.

OK.  Yeah, that one does take the booby prize for a truly "special" opinion.

Please tell me you at least tried to drown him in a toilet.

You know, for music's sake!   8)

I suppose one could mindlessly repeat Glenn Gould's "arguments" about why Mozart didn't feature in his programs whether recorded or live, as I assume your interlocutor did....doesn't make it so.  That's just the opinion of one person, no matter how eccentric or outlandish.

Mozart had a good ear for finding catchy melodies, and I still defy anyone to find a better aria than the Queen's second from Zauberflöte.

This is one of the great filmed/taped performances with good mic coverage of the orchestra and the soloist, but I'd expect somebody with absolute or even a good ear will find these things intolerable.

I think Mozskowski made a little piano bravura arrangement of this, but I'm still into Hammond organ in RH, and acoustic piano with damper pedal and sostenuto pedal fully engaged to provide the accompaniment with the other hand.  At least that's how I try to play this when I can't think of anything better to do at home.

Yes, I lose the ability to shape the organ manual vocal line by using the pedals on the acoustic piano....my concept is good, but the execution needs some work.  It works out fine because one is just needling the expression pedal for the organ at most a centimeter or so, but it's much easier to swap hands to another keyboard instrument than to swap feet from one to the other.

Percussionists will likely laugh at that last bit, given all they have to do, running around literally.  But if a percussionist misses a cue...that's bad, but the world will continue to rotate.

If I accidentally step on a foot pedal generating tones while stabbing at the expression pedal for the manual I'm using for the soprano's voice?  That's far worse.  They'll be hearing that note for several miles well after I'm on to the next bar twenty ahead.

The only thing that bothers me with some opera, is that sometimes they have this major climax that sometimes has a high note, but then the melody seems to drop down and end on a rather normal pitch.

Sometimes you want the piece to end on the high note - makes it more ecstatic.

But she's only one woman, chief!

I would have thought the melisma alone would have made you angry.

Get mad, you son of a pregnant dog!

/* way late edit, but for the non-musicians in the audience...you see how Jodie is turning the page of the score/her part?

Do you think she forgot the words all of a sudden?

No, obviously not.  Even I know the freaking words to this one, and my German spoken language is not that good.

It's pour encourager les autres.

I don't mind melisma's unless it's Christina Aguilera singing... she sings like sh*t.

It's like 17 notes for every bloody syllable; it's bloody ridiculous.

Yeah.  What's all this hostility?  Did you turn into Charles Grodin all of a sudden?

Sure.

You can see it here too.  Curmudgeonly little man spouting off about opera.

What'd Wesley Willis do to you, anyway?  His music always ended on a high note.

Wheaties, the breakfast of champions.

Good talk.  Yeah, that was productive ten minutes of my time I'll never get back.

First of all - Charles Grodin was a legend in America. Maybe not one of the greatest actors, but his deadpan humour was an art form.

Meh... I don't touch that American rot... now WEETABIX. There's a breakfast of champions.

Very little sugar, wholesome... tasty as hell.
